Susan C Wright
The original Meeker Hotal building was purchased by a pioneering woman named Sarah C. Wright who went into debt 1500
dollars to acquire it. She was a southern lady from South Carolina with the urge to explore the Wild West.
She made her way through Mississippi, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and finally the White River Valley of northwest Colorado.
She homesteaded in March 1883 at the foot of what is known as Nine Mile Hill. That fall she established the business that
would survive over a century and become a landmark of Colorado, our humble hotel.
At this time S.C. Wright was the only female member of the Town Company and known for intelligence, generosity and hospitality
(and the colorful habit of being a late 1800’s female who enjoyed a nice mild cigar!) It is said that S.C. Wright would never
turn anyone in need away from the Meeker Hotel. Susan passed away in 1893
